SMDS Challenge Cup 2001 Results

quick links | report map

The Sheffield & Mansfield Dragon Slayers (SMDS for short) are an amalgamation of around forty keen Warhammer players from various groups within Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. These groups are affectionately known as “Chapters” and are, in no particular order, the Mansfield Wargames Club, the Sheffield Dragon Slayers, God’s Impressive Mythical Players Society (GIMPS) and the Nottingham Lads.

Now, bragging rights are very important in the SMDS and we had an idea it would be relatively amusing to pit Dragon Slayer against Dragon Slayer to find out which Chapter is, indeed, the best. Thus was born the SMDS Challenge Cup, a tournament in which the deadliest Warhammer players in the universe would get to bash each other senseless over a gaming table! However, we also thought it would be a good idea to extend invitations to other players in order to provide yet further stiff competition (and of course to ensure others will fear the strength in depth found within our club). To that end, we decided to invite the top twenty players in the country (selected using the system used to rank players in the WPS magazine Total Power) and anybody who doesn’t normally get to play in UK tournaments - such as the Games Workshop design team, the WPS Committee and any “foreigners”, which does include Scottish people!

In the end the destination of the first and only SMDS Challenge Cup was a close run-thing between the Nottingham Lads and the Mansfield Wargames Club, but the former chapter took it thanks to the sterling performances of Dave Batten, Martin Bunting and Göran Farm, who all finished in the top twelve. Third place went to the Sheffield Dragon Slayers and last to the GIMPS, yah boo sucks to them!

Top spot in the individual placings belonged to the MWC, though; on the day it was no surprise that Rob Lane grabbed first place and the Best General award simply because he'd been on table one since Saturday night! He beat everybody he came up against, including second-placed Alan Thompson, who was also Best Sportsman. A well-deserved third place went to Mr Hawaii shirt himself, Andy Stevenson of the GIMPS chapter, as well as the Best Painted Army award, and the only SDS member who could take any pride was Darren Dabell, coming in fourth. Maybe if they'd had more attendees they'd have done a bit better!
