Dragon Slayer Additional Scoring

quick links | rules map

Players and their armies will not only be judged on the strength of their gaming prowess, of course, and although additional scoring like painting or sportsmanship will not have as great an influence on a players' final placing as gaming, it still has an effect. In other words, please make sure you take this scoring seriously!

All armies are expected to be fully-painted, just like Pete Scholey's Arabic Empire dudes!

Painting
reward | penalty

Whilst Dragon Slayer tournaments are not about forcing people to paint their armies, it has to be said that unpainted models do detract from the overall spectacle. Two painted armies facing off against each other look very nice indeed on the tabletop! It’s for this reason that painting is included in the overall score.

The points given for painting will begin at zero points, and the maximum given is 3,000. The Umpires will then mark your army and apply penalty and reward criteria that follow these guidelines:

Reward points

In the Dragon Slayers we believe effort should be rewarded as much as talent, and at least three quarters of the points available for painting can be gained by painters and modellers of any standard. Please note that for a unit to count as being painted, it must have at least three colours upon it!

Max Reward:
Given for:
+2,500
Painted and based
Units that are painted and based will be rewarded regardless of the perceived quality of the painting or modelling. Ensure the models’ bases are painted and textured in some manner, too. For example, if you have taken a unit of painted Chaos Knights that costs 300 points, you will receive a reward of 300 points.
+75
Banners
Any units that require them must have painted banners attached in order to gain these points. Each painted banner will gain a reward of 25 points, up to a maximum of 75.
+75
Markings
Units that have been painted in a coherent pattern will receive this reward. Each unit with a standardised emblem or set of markings—on shields, tunics or helmet plumes, for example—will gain a reward of 25 points, up to a maximum of 75.
+100
Conversions
Models that have been converted in some manner will be rewarded. Note that such models do not have to be characters, but simple weapon swaps will not count. The Umpires will be very stringent about this reward, so make sure your conversion stands out from the off-the-peg model! Each conversion will gain a reward of 25 points, up to a maximum of 100.
+125
Detailed
All of the models have had the details of the models painted in a variety of colours or with noticeable effects. This discriminates between the merely painted and an army that has really been worked upon.
+125
Wow!
The army has impressed the Umpires immensely! This is an army that is clearly among the best painted they have ever seen, and is in contention for the Best Painted Army award.

Penalty points

Penalty points for painting scoring are awarded for using unpainted or half-painted units and for using models painted by someone other than yourself. Please note that undercoated models count as unpainted, not half-painted.

You MUST signify which units you have painted on your army list. If you don’t, you may not be liable for any painting scores!

Max Penalty:
Given for:
-2,500
Unpainted
Any units that are unpainted or undercoated will cause your painting score to be reduced. For example, if you have taken a unit of unpainted Trolls that costs 195 points, you will receive a penalty of 195 points.
-1,250
Banners
Any units that are half-painted or haven’t been based and textured—for example, you might have completed most of the unit, but that back rank looks a little silvery—will, again, cause your painting score to be reduced. However, half-painted units will only incur a penalty equal to half the unit’s cost, rounding up. For example, if you have taken a unit of half-painted Shades that cost 75 points, you will receive a penalty of 38 points.

Sportsmanship
problem | scoring

There are always times when players might want to reward their opponents because they've been a great sport, or penalise them because they've thrown his toys out of the pram. That’s what sportsmanship scoring is for!

The points given for sportsmanship will begin at zero points, and the maximum given is 3,000.

The problem with Sportsmanship

One of the biggest problems with sportsmanship scoring is “all fours” syndrome. To give a player the maximum sportsmanship score available each round is somewhat ludicrous—was every game you played literally the best you’ve ever had? Similarly, there are some unscupulous individuals who will mark all of his opponents low simply to harm their chances of a good placing. For this reason we’ve decided to do something to eradicate such scoring!

Players are only allowed to give one of his opponents a ‘Brilliant’ or ‘Bad’ score, but are not limited in the amount of other scoring types. Players who consistently give low scores will get a bit of a talking to!

Scoring Opponents

At the end of game five (rather than after each game), you will be given a score sheet upon which you must mark each of your opponents for sportsmanship. You must fill in your name and then rank each of your opponents according to the following guidelines:

Max Points:
Given for:
+600
Brilliant!
I had a fantastic time! My opponent was wonderful and showed great character and courtesy. We had no problems with rules whatsoever and it was one of the best games I’ve ever had!
+500
Good
I had a really good game and a great laugh against someone who knows what he’s doing. I’d play my opponent again without reservation!
+400
Okay
We had an average game, really — a few queries cropped up and it wasn’t great fun, but I’d play this person again.
+300
Fair
It was all right, I suppose. I’m not sure if I really enjoyed it, to be honest, and I probably wouldn’t like to play my opponent again.
+200
Bad
It was a very bad-tempered game and I really didn’t enjoy it at all. I wish I hadn’t played this person and don’t want to in the future.

Rules Quiz
why | scoring | sheet

We thought that, rather than an open book quiz on the background of Warhammer, we’d test your knowledge of the game itself.

The points given for the rules quiz will begin at zero points, and the maximum given is 3,000.

Why a Rules Quiz?

Having attended a great number of tournaments around the world as well as running a few of our own, the Dragon Slayers realised that a lot of players simply don’t know the rules as well as they should. Worst of all, Umpires were being asked to adjudicate on basic rules that could be found in the rulebook easily! Therefore, what better to find out who does know the rules and who blags it than a rules quiz?

Rules Quiz Scoring

The Rules Quiz will take the format of thirty questions on various aspects of the Warhammer rules or background, each with four multiple choice answers. Each correct answer is worth a hundred points.

Quiz Sheet

The Rules Quiz will occur before game five and just after lunch on the Sunday, and each player will be given the Quiz Sheets upon which are thirty questions. Pens will be supplied if you don’t have one, but be prepared for a dirty look!

You must fill in your name and then answer each question in turn. You will have thirty minutes to complete the quiz and if you run out of time you must put your pen down immediately.

You are not allowed to look in the rulebook or any other publication for the answers. Anybody found doing so will not receive any Rules Quiz scores and may get a slap!
