Summer Blood Bowl 2003

quick links | league map

The Summer Blood Bowl 2003 league is hopefully the first of a few specialist games campaigns for the Dragon Slayers, although it's debatable whether we'll hold more than one a year - after all, we're Warhammer players at heart and I doubt more than one game system a year can fit into our deluded psyches!

The league will be played through August to December of 2003, with the end of December set aside for the finals.

All games must be played at the regular club meet at the Gas Club and the league's really being run to ensure Dragon Slayer members have a crack at a different, and yet very enjoyable, game. It'll maybe entice a few other die-hard Warhammer-only members to join in too!

To play a league game simply declare your next game to the commissioner and all scores will be recorded over the length of the league until everybody has played each other twice or the finals come around (whichever is earliest). The coaches with the eight highest scores go on to the finals.

How simple is that?

Finals

quarter-finals | semi-finals | final
losers' games | finals table

With only six of us eventually attending the finals we decided to hold quarters, semis and the final as normal, but taking the fourth semi-finalist from the best losers. All the losers would play three games too, of course, and the whole lot would be entered into a mini-league to find out who'd get to choose their prizes first!

Quarter Finals

The quarter-finals were hotly contested as expected, but both Dave Grant and Andrew Chesney stormed through in style, the latter playing Rob Lane's Chaos team The Icebreakers at their own game, causing five casualties and reducing them to six players at the end of the match. That's what I call a hammering!

Semi Finals

With Richard Paget gaining two more points than both Rob Lane and Matt Otter in the quarter-finals, he was adjudged to be the best loser and so he went on to face Andrew Chesney in the first semi-final. That left Greg Chambers to take on the might of Dave Grant...

Final

Unsurprisingly it was the more experienced Dave Grant and Andrew Chesney who contested the Final, and a rip-roarer it provided to be, especially as the Orcs & Goblins were boosted by Morg 'n Thorg and a chainsaw-wielding loony! Unfortunately though we didn't have enough time to finish the final game of the day thanks to the Gas Club getting the Saturday night's turn in a bit early: but never mind, it was a foregone conclusion at the end of the first half somewhat, as you can see!

Losers' Games

Of course, the other players weren't going to sit around and do nothing whilst the other games were going on, especially as these results would be entered into a mini-league to find out who would get first choice at the prizes!

Finals Table

Congratulations go to Dave Grant and Andrew Chesney for getting to the final, and Dave Grant for actually winning of course: it wasn't really a surprise as he scored twelve touchdowns in three games! It was certainly a surprise to see the winner of the League itself - Rob Lane - propping up the rest of the finalists, though! It must have been something they put in the beer!

Thanks to everybody who turned up and hopefully you all enjoyed yourself!

Week 16
Tuesday, 16th December 2003

Well, that's it - the very last night of the league and three games played! Another newbie named Adam Winters somehow managed to play three games in one night, which is quite amazing when you think about it. Didn't do him much good though!

League Table

The final league placings should be no surprise to regular viewers: thanks to playing everyone, his dog and their cousins, Rob Lane has managed to win enough games to win overall. It pays to be prolific! As well as that, he's played the most games, scored the most touchdowns and caused the most casualties, although one suspects that if Dave Grant had been attending the club night he'd be ahead by a mile instead. Ah well, you can't have 'em all!

Overall it's been a pretty good introduction to a game most of us knew nothing about beforehand. Thirty-four games in five months is not a bad return really, considering most of the Slayers are Warhammer mad - so hopefully, next year will be even better.

Of course, the Finals are this Saturday too, so stay tuned for the winners of the Summer Blood Bowl 2003 next week!
